"Clouds" by Daniel P. Crozet |
|
Runs Through June 15
Daniel P. Crozet is our featured photographer for the current exhibit titled "Clouds". In describing the photographs, Peter Marr commented that "Daniel Crozet's unique, sublime images and transformations are exquisitely presented on inkjet paper, canvas, and most delicately on silk fabric, especially created by Jane Ellen B. As an added bonus, some of the images are accompanied by thought-provoking poems by Alicia Vandevorst. One has to marvel at the wonderful way that Daniel has captured fleeting moments in time, and how he has interpreted these images in the digital media."
Collaborating with Daniel are Jane Ellen B, fabric artist, who used a hand-dyed technique and Daniel's photographs on silk to fashion wonderful silk creations. Alicia Vandevorst's poetry integrates perfectly with Daniel's clouds in a number of the photographs. For links to Jane Ellen and Alicia's websites click on the links with their names.

Peter Marr Picks Three Favorites from the "Clouds" Show and Exhibits his own Marvelous Bird Photographs
Each month Peter Marr makes his "picks" from the photographs shown by the featured photographer and the guest photographers in the show. Peter, an enthusiastic, award-winning photographer, chose one of Daniel Crozet's and one each from the exhibits by Elsa Kettinger and by Brian Sciarabba. Peter is an expert judge in both local and international photographic competitions and his written interpretations give a wonderful sense of each of the selected photographs. Click here to see Peter's Picks.
A added bonus this month is that Peter has an exhibit of wonderful bird photographs he has taken. Selected from his personal collection of prints that he has personally printed, they are marvelous. |

Featuring the Work of George Wallace, our Newest Partner
George Wallace joined Image City a couple of months ago and his photographs are currently featured in our newly remodeled East Gallery. George comments that "photography has made me more aware of how complex experiences are communicated in form and color and light. The effort to get it right, to capture the emotional moment is tremendously satisfying ... Whether it is a person, place, or an object, I want my photographs to reveal the feeling of the moment. I want as much as possible to share the experience the mood with the viewer." His feline photograph of "Socrates" awaits an eye-ball to eye-ball visit from you. |
Gary Thompson's Photo Tip of the Month |

Bad Weather Means Good Photography
David Muench has a saying that, "Bad Weather means Good Photography". I have found this to be very true. Some of the best sunrises and sunsets occur when strong storms begin to clear. This image of Texas Falls in Vermont was taken during a heavy rainstorm which was part of the fall-out of a July hurricane. I used 400 ISO print film in my Pentax 6x7 camera with a polarizing filter to capture this scene. At F/16 my shutter speed was four seconds. I call this a "Two Umbrella Shot" - one over my camera & tripod and the other over my camera bag. I wore a waterproof parka, rain pants, and hiking boots. In these kinds of severe conditions you can get great images if you are prepared, stay calm, take your time and work carefully. I always bring rain gear and two umbrellas on my photo journeys. "Rain can be beautiful"! .

Mercury and Wings II
by Sheridan Vincent
My Image, " Mercury and Wings II" combines two iconic features of Rochester's skyline. I first saw the possibility while driving on an upper floor of the parking ramp on South Avenue when I saw Mercury atop the Lawyers Cooperative Extension building pass in front of the Wings of the Times Square Building. Although they are a couple of blocks apart, a long-lens perspective brings them together with careful positioning in what I thought was an interesting juxtaposition. I have shot it twice, catching a moment in the second attempt with a morning-sunrise lighting against a darkened sky and approaching rain shower. The contrast of the human form of the Mercury statue and the intricate structure of the Wings opened up by the lighting enhance my appreciation of the past artists who can inspire us yet today. To credit them, the sculptor for Mercury was J. Guernsey Mitchell who produced it in 1881 and the architect for the "Wings of Progress" was Ralph T. Walker completed in 1930.
