Antarctica Journey by Ted Tatarzyn |
|
Runs Through Sunday November 30
The current show is Antarctica Journey: Seven Continent Wanderlust by Ted Tatarzyn. Especially considering the expedition to travel to the bottom of the earth and spend four weeks in the Antarctic, Ted Tatarzyn's exhibit is a fascinating study of the beauty of the region captured with striking images and presented with striking photographs. Last week Ted entertained an enthusiastic audience at the gallery with his travelogue presentation of his adventure. A comment from the audience during the program picked the photo "King Heads", at left,as the best composition in the show. If you haven't seen Ted's show, make a point to visit the gallery before the show ends on November 30 at 4pm. We think we can guarantee that you will be infatuated with the varied blues of Antarctic ice or the penguins and albatross in their natural place. Ted also has numerous photographs from his travels to the other six continents he has visited with his camera and photographic eye. Ted's photographs are also exhibited at Edibles Restaurant and Starry Nites Cafe just down the street from the gallery.
The current exhibit also features the work of Guest Photographers Julie Oldfield in our East Gallery with a wonderful series of Rochester scenes and Steve Tryon exhibiting work from his recent canoe expedition in the Adirondacks. Exhibiting Artists-in-Residence are Gil Maker, Jim Patton, and David Perlman. Exhibiting Gallery Partners are Daniel P. Crozet, Joel Krenis, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, Sheridan Vincent, and George Wallace.

Picks of the Show |
|
Peter Marr Picks Three Favorites from the Current Show
For each of the Image City shows Peter Marr picks his favorites from the photographs exhibited by the featured photographer and the guest photographers. For the Antarctica Journey show Peter chose Ted Tatarzyn's photos Adelie Penguin, Rainbow Sky and Icicles (shown at right), where Peter commented "For me, this sublime image is quintessential Antarctica." He also picked Ted's King Creche Pattern at River Mouth, commenting on the "powerful S-curve that takes the penguin colony breathtakingly way beyond the confines of the print border, a colony which seemingly goes on forever."
Peter also picked the photograph Porthole by Julie Oldfield where "the strong three-dimensional porthole leaps out of the frame" as one of her "exquisite prints of vignettes of Rochester." Click here to see all of Peter's Picks and to read the full comments he has written in his fine review. |
Gary Thompson's Photo Tip of Month |

Sunbursting Sunrises and Sunsets
One of the main obstacles when shooting directly into the sun during sunrises and sunsets is that lens flare is almost certain to occur. To counteract this, I sometimes sunburst the sun against a silhouetted subject. I step down my aperture to f/22 and rather precisely position my tripod and camera so that only a tiny sliver of the sun is showing. A tiny sliver is about 1/50th or 1/100th of the sun. Any larger amount of sun will almost certainly produce lens flare. To check on lens flare and the sunburst itself, I push in my depth-of-field button to observe the effects of the f/22 aperture. In my example image, I used a sunburst to capture my rendition of the often photographed Mesa Arch. Note that the image was taken about 20-minutes after sunrise, but, because of the sunburst, still communicates the feeling of the sunrise. The large difference in light intensity of the sunrise and the back and underside of the arch made it necessary for me to bracket my exposures widely. I generally avoid using a polarizer when shooting into the sun as it usually has no effect and increases the probability of lens flare. Opportunity to Save on Select Photographs
We announced in past newsletters the Image City Collectors' Club, an opportunity for you to add to your photograph collection with a bit of a discount. We also are in hopes that this opportunity will stimulate some additional sales of the fine photographs we exhibit during each of our shows.
For a nominal $35 membership fee, Collectors' Club members can annually purchase up to five photographs from the photographs specially identified as part of the Collector's Club program. Each Collectors' Club photograph shows the special discount price available to the members. We hope you will consider participating.
