Masters Invitational |

Current Show Runs Through Sunday, April 19
The current show at Image City Photography Gallery features photographs by four educators in an exhibit titled the Masters Invitational. Professors Carl Chiarenza of the University of Rochester, Andy Davidhazy and John Retallack of Rochester Institute of Technology and Kitty Hubbard of State University of New York at Brockport have assembled an exceptional exhibit of their works. In the East Gallery is a wonderful collection of photographs by photography students at Victor High School, where Ron Bartlett is their teacher. Seeing the creative accomplishments of the students and educators covers an exceptional gamut of style, vision, and advanced technique. You will miss a great opportunity, if you do not stop in and see the exhibit. To get a preview check out our " Preview of the Show" link.
Additional photographs are exhibited by Artists-in-Residence David Perlman, Jim Patton, and Gil Maker as well as Gallery Partners Daniel P. Crozet, Joel Krenis, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, Sheridan Vincent, and George Wallace. For full details of the show click here. |

Peter Marr Picks his Favorites from the Masters Invitational
For each of our shows, we invite Peter Marr to pick his favorite photographs from the work of the featured photographers and the guest photographers. Peter had quite a challenge with so many exceptional photographs to consider.
From the exceptional presentation by the Victor High School photography students, Peter picked Truth by Tori Putch shown at the left, commenting "This intriguing image is beautifully arranged, photographed and presented. It leaves the viewer with a whole range of options as to what the author is stating, what she meant us to see, and what we really do see. Great picture."
The four selections of photographs by the educators in the Masters Invitational really deserve a better viewing on our website, click here. You will certainly want to see them along with Tori's at full size in the gallery exhibit to fully appreciate all of the photographs that Peter Picked. |
Gary Thompson's Photo Tip of Month |

Study the Scene before Entering
I have often advised students to study the scene before racing off to shoot it. Here is an example with the photograph Cabin in the Woods taken by my wife and fellow photographer, Phyllis. When Phyllis and I were leading a photo tour to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we drove by a picturesque cabin in Cades Cove. After parking, we jumped out of our vans and all of us, except Phyllis, moved quickly into the wooded areas to each side of the cabin. Our intent was to use leaf canopies and other wooded elements as foreground in shooting side and angle views of the cabin.
Phyllis studied the scene from near the road and observed the subtle echoing "s" curved lines of an above ground root, a winding stream, and an echoing shadow. She combined them to create a wonderful foreground that covers about 70 percent of her overall frame. Phyllis placed the cabin slightly off center in the background to complete her landscape. Soft sunlight touched the grass areas to render interest and a pleasant mood for the viewer. We all captured good images of the cabin, however, Phyllis' image was by far the most creative and aesthetically pleasing. The lesson to be learned is to "survey and study the scene before entering."

Meet our New Partner
The partners at Image City are pleased to announce that Don Menges has joined us as a partner of the gallery. Don retired several years ago as a former math teacher and he was the first Technology Integration Teacher in New York State. He is a member of several local and national photography clubs, groups, and associations. In his enthusiasm for photography he says "I enjoy photographing everything, always looking for that image that clearly defines a person, a place, or a thing. Often it's just capturing an image that describes an ordinary thing in an extraordinary manner." Don was honored by having his photo at High Falls (shown above) selected in the current issue of Shutterbug magazine for their assignment "A River Runs Through It". The photograph is currently part of the Photographer's Path 12 exhibit at High Falls Gallery. Don will begin to exhibit his work at Image City with the next show beginning April 22. Join us in welcoming Don! |

Details will be Announced Shortly
Photographers, be on the lookout for an upcoming announcement about an exciting opportunity to participate in a juried event this summer at Image City. Following the success of our "The Magic of Light" juried show last January, our survey of photographers showed that there was a high level of interest in another opportunity. We have teamed up with Lumiere Photo, 439 Monroe Avenue, who is sponsoring the event with us. We are working up the final details of the announcement, so stay tuned and start thinking "Portfolio". |
