Current Show Runs Through Sunday, July 12
 Face of India, the current featured exhibit is by Jim Patton, an Artist-in-Residence at Image City. In the words of Peter Marr, Jim's photographs show an "affection and warmth for the people that clearly shines through...beautifully presented as a tribute to his interest and meaningful interactions with the people and culture of this great country". In the East Gallery, our new partner, Don Menges exhibits what Peter describes as "a vibrancy and uniqueness that is both fascinating and delightful."
Guest photographers in the exhibit are Rashmi Hande, Julie Oldfield, Gretchen Targee, Arianna Valentini, Dave Wiedemer, and John Williamson. Additionally Jeno Horvath, David Kotok, Sheila Nelson, Rick Mearns, and Wu-Hsiung Yang exhibit select works by Camera Rochester members. A total of twenty-two photographers are exhibiting their work including Artists-in-Residence Gil Maker and David Perlman as well as Gallery Partners: Daniel P. Crozet, Joel Krenis, Don Menges, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, Sheridan Vincent, and George Wallace. For full details of the show click here. Peter Marr Picks his Favorites from the Exhibit
 For each of our shows, we invite Peter Marr to pick his favorite photographs from the work of the featured photographers and the guest photographers. Peter always has quite a challenge with so many exceptional photographs to consider. From Jim Patton's exhibit he picked Mother and Daughter shown in the previous article with the comment "Jim has sublimely caught more than just love and endearment; he has recorded tradition, faith, culture and family devotion that dates many centuries."
Peter also picked Starry Reflection, above, by Don Menges, commenting "this mysterious element definitely adds a delightful uniqueness... lifting this exquisite and wonderfully seen and captured shot into the realm of the extraordinary."  John Williamson's Goat Island Lighthouse, at right, is "a majestic panoramic landscape, remarkable for its simplicity, its exquisite color, and for its breathtaking view." The fourth pick is A Portrait, below, by Wu-Hsiung Yang with the Camera Rochester exhibit -- "this is a truly modern, dynamic image, showing us the strength and the intensity of a man who is proud of his heritage, dignified of who he is, and what he has accomplished." There you will have the best impressions when you see the photograph in the gallery setting along with the full review.

| Winners Announced - Portfolio Showcase 2009 |

The Image City Photography Gallery Portfolio Showcase 2009, sponsored by LUMIERE PHOTO, call for entries received an overwhelming response. More than 120 portfolios were submitted, all of them of an impressive quality. It has been a difficult task for the Jurors - William Edwards, Dan Neuberger, Brian Oglesbee, and Gary Thompson - to make their choice. After hours of viewing, discussion and debate they selected the following eight winners: - Matthias Boettrich from Rochester, NY - Robert Clemens from Rochester, NY - Chris Kogut from Pittsford, NY - Susan C. Larkin from Brooktondale, NY - Rick Mearns from Rochester, NY - Daniel J. Nolan from Honeoye, NY - Tim Schulze from Rochester, NY - Ted Tatarzyn from Rochester, NY Congratulations to them all!As winners, they will receive from Lumiere Photo a $250 award certificate applicable towards purchase of any of Lumiere Photo's many products and services. In addition their portfolio will be exhibited at the Gallery from August 12 to September 6, 2009, and it will be reproduced in the show catalog specially designed and printed by Lumiere Photo.
All submitted portfolios were of high quality and demonstrated the creativity and the photographic skills of their author. During the Portfolio Showcase 2009 exhibition, we wish to recognize the high quality of the submissions. Therefore we plan on showing a selection of the photographs which have been submitted with a high-resolution monitor.
All the Gallery Partners and the Lumiere Photo Team wish to thank all participants for supporting this new Image City initiative.
We look forward to presenting a show of exceptional quality. Please come and enjoy it and join us for the opening reception on Friday, August 14, 2009 between 5 and 8.30 pm. The award ceremony will take place between 6.30pm and 7.00pm.

Be Flexible
 Last month I wrote about the importance of pre-planning, particularly for sunrise shoots. This month I would like to caution against being too focused on your plan. If on the way to a planned shoot location you catch yourself yelling WOW!!!, you should pay attention to your senses. "WOWs" usually mean you are on to something special. These occurrences should be treated as unplanned opportunities that need to be investigated.
A few years ago Phyllis and I were camped near the entrance to Cade's Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Preplanning had placed us almost directly at the entrance, poised to enter the cove, which is a high mountain valley, at first light the next morning. On that next morning, while making the short drive to the cove's entrance, we observed a picturesque stream with wonderful backlit silky fog. We were "WOWed", and fortunately adjusted our plans, and began photographing this beautiful stream intending to take a few minutes to record its moody atmosphere. An hour-and-a-half later, after shooting about a hundred images, we were still captivated by the scene. First light in Cade's Cove was postponed to the next day. My example image is titled Abram's Creek. Recent news from Kodak makes it ironic that this month's photo tip was recorded on KODACHROME Slide Film.
