The World through Different Eyes

Current Show Runs Through Sunday, June 12

Friendship by David PerlmanOur current exhibit is by Artists-in-Residence Jim Patton and David Perlman. The title The World through Different Eyes  highlights difference in their photographic styles, however, you will find  that they each have mastered their art that combines to be another fascinating exhibit at Image City. In choosing one of Jim Patton's for his "Picks" Peter Marr commented that "A noted icon of photography, Bill Brandt once stated, 'Most photographers would feel a certain embarrassment in admitting publicly that they carried within them a sense of wonder, yet without it they would not produce the work they do, whatever their particular field.' This sense of wonder is very apparent in all of Jim's images in this exhibition, in which he has eloquently and lovingly captured the very essence, beauty and spirit, of the Vietnamese people. All of his prints are captivating and inspiring, and I particularly admire Rural Mother, Embroidering (at right)  for it also illustrates a particular value often missing in western cultures, namely, that everyone seems to utilize every precious moment of each day to the fullest.  Another Peter's Pick is David Perlman's Friendship (at left). "I venture that it would be almost unfeasible for anyone not to fall in love Bac Ha Market by Jim Pattonwith this idyllic print. The warmth, love and feeling that the young lady has for her companion is amazingly apparent, and we know that she is forever thinking of the many years ahead that they will experience together. Nothing is going to separate them, and life today and into the far distant future, could not be more wonderful. Hopefully, all of us can share in this love and affection so that it can reflect and serve as a model for our own lives. Truly a superb and enchanting image. Thank you, David." Jim and David have been long-time supporters of Image City -- we very much appreciate that support and their art!

Guest photographers during this show include Steve Tryon in the East Gallery, Art Dunn and Stevie Welch. Camera Rochester members with their winning photographs from their competitions Ben Barlow, Archie Curry, Mark Miller, Susan Roth, John Sekol, and Bill Shannon.

We round out the show with work by gallery partners Dick Bennett, Steve Levinson, Gil Maker, Dan Neuberger, Don Menges, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, and Sheridan Vincent.

First Friday Gallery Night is June 3 when the Gallery will be participating in  Rochester's monthly night of arts and culture. The Gallery is open on First Friday until 9pm.

Peter's Picks for the Current Show

Peter Marr selects his favorites

We have mentioned "Peter's Picks" in the frirst article, during each of our shows, Peter Marr makes his picks of the show from the work of the featured wall artist and the guest photographers. He writes an interesting and entertaining commentary on the chosen photographs. We include a shortened version of Peter's comments here in the newsletter. To see larger images and the full article click here.

Bac Ha Market by Jim Patton

Another of Jim Patton's photographs selected by Peter is

Bac Ha Market. Peter noted that "Jim certainly took a road not traveled routinely by visitors from the west, to arrive at this Vietnamese market where he has creatively captured this amazingly colorful detail. This resplendent print, besides being a terrific, eye-catching photograph, would make a powerful advertising image for any manufacturer of cloth or thread, especially in the far-east. The lovely lighting and high camera viewpoint emphasize the awesome, unrivaled colors and designs of the costumes and related apparel. The highly colorful designs are just awesome in their visual diversity and extended range of hues. Every color that one has ever seen is here, except for white, which is only barely visible if one looks hard enough for it."

Echo of Steam by David PerlmanA second of David Perlman's selected as a Peter's Pick is The Echo of Steam. In commenting on this photograph, Peter observed that "One can truly feel, hear and even smell the true grandeur of the industrial age. Our towering, historic aura is at the same time, however, touched with a degree of sadness, for unlike the stately columns reflecting a picture of permanence, we know that the proud, resplendent steam engine will one day be silenced, to become a lasting memorial in a transport museum. I am certainly in awe of David, who has amalgamated so remarkably two distinct images into one superb assembly. Not only is his print visually stunning, it strikingly transports us both in time and sound from the distant past into the unknown future. A truly wonderful image."

Spring Light by Susan RothPeter's next selection is Spring Light by Susan Roth. Peter commented "The combination of a black-and-white photograph of a majestic grove of trees, with an image of foliage and undergrowth that has luminances on the lightest placements of the gray scale, has resulted in a spectacular masterly print, artistically created by Susan. My greatest compliment to her is that she has given us an image that even nature herself (on a black and white scale of course), could not equal for its sheer beauty and transparency. Here we see stately trees reaching proudly into the imagined canopy, monoliths, which range from a true black all the way to the faintest gray, giving this forest scene a wonderful depth and three dimensional quality. ....."

The Best Camera

"The best camera", the saying goes, "is the one you have with you." And for most of us this means our cell phone. More pictures are taken with cell phones than any other camera combined. Since more people use their cell phones, the death of point and shoot cameras is very near.

It is not hard to understand why. Besides being on you all the time, cell phones keep getting better and better. Some phones now have 8 megapixels, more than enough to print a good 8x10 image.   And all phones now have apps. In the Apples App store there are over 4000 photography apps priced at $2 or less, 2400 are free. Some of these apps replace the Apple's own camera app. Others extend the creative options available to users:  editing tools, stitching, HDR, etc.  And this does not count apps made for phones powered by Android and Microsoft.

There is a bigger reason why cell phones are going to bring about the demise of point and shoot. The connectivity that cell phones provide is the real destroyer. Connectivity allows us to live-blog photos, publish to Facebook, Twitter, yourBlog.com in real time. Camera phones tighten the connection between shooter and viewer because they collapse the process to near instantaneous. Their you are in Paris visiting the Eiffel Tower, taking a picture with your family and your friends view it 30 seconds later. No point and shoot can do that.

I hear you saying fine, all that is good, but what about the "fine art" photographer. The cell phone will never replace the big bulky DSLR. I beg to differ. There are many websites being created by very fine cell phone photographers. One that I recommend is "The Best Camera Site" (http://thebestcamera.com). Check out the site. There is some great photography being produced.

And I know that we must have some very talented cell phone photographers in Rochester. Image City Photography Gallery wants to see them. So take this as a hint. Watch for an announcement about our first Juried Cell Phone Show coming soon.
