Rochester Moments by Sheridan Vincent

Current Show Runs Through Sunday, October 2

Our current exhibit, Rochester Moments, is by Sheridan Vincent, Gallery Partner. He presents photographs of the Rochester region that catches moments where a common reaction to them has been "wow". The exhibit is enhanced by the work of several Guest Photographers. Jim Dusen, produced a dynamic portfolio of photographs from a single popular destination that suggests extensive world-wide travel. Jeff Mills, is exhibiting a series that he titled "Mostly Water" that evokes a mood with a natural beauty and calm. Clay Gehring volunteers at Image City in a very helpful manner. His exhibit is a powerful, dramatic selection of his work. Slawek Goc, is a Polish Photographer from Indianapolis whose large photographs of New York City images brings us to a remembrance of 9/11. Six photographs by Camera Rochester winners from their club competition show an exceptional range of composition and creativity; the Camera Rochester photographers are Ted Barnett, Stan Hattman, David Kotok, Susan Kaye, Michelle Turner, and Michael Edwards.

We round out the show with photography exhibits by Artists-in-Residence, Jim Patton, and David Perlman and Gallery Partners Dick Bennett, Carl Crumley, Steve Levinson, Gil Maker, Dan Neuberger, Don Menges, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, and Phyllis Thompson.

Image City Critiques

At Image City on Wednesday, October 5 at 7pm

Each month, we have had a good turnout for Image City Critiques, our free program at the Gallery to provide participants an opportunity to engage in a friendly, constructive, and positive critique and review of their photographs. The sessions are held on the first Wednesday of the month. Join us for the next on Wednesday, October 5th from 7:00-9:00 pm. Please furnish 2 or 3 jpg images or prints. It is preferable to send digital files by Tuesday, October 4 to gmaker@mac.com.  Images may be on a CD or on a thumb drive and should be sized at most 1MB in size and at most 1500 pixels on the longest side. If you have any questions please contact Don Menges (dmenges@rochester.rr.com) or Gil Maker (gmaker@mac.com). This month's assignment is to try to take and bring "point of view" into your composition. We look forward to meeting with you on Wednesday, October 5 at 7pm.
Camera Rochester
Rochester's Premier Camera Club

For most of our exhibits you will find a fabulous display of photographs by photographers from Camera Rochester, a premier club of avid photographers in the Rochester area. The photographs are from the club competitions and are always keen examples of fine art, technique, and accomplished skills in all aspects.

The next program is this coming Monday, September 19 when "Mr. Gary Albright presents a program on photo restoration. Gary is an art conservator who has worked on many damaged photographs and other paper articles while in private practice and for museums, including a period of time when he was a conservator at the George Eastman House here in Rochester. His projects have included the Emancipation Proclamation, a Honus Wagner baseball card, Ansel Adams photographs, and working drafts of the Constitution of the United States. In this day and age when we think of using Photoshop or other computer software to restore digital copies of photographs it's fascinating to hear about using paste and watercolors to restore originals!"

The program begins Monday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church, 1900 Westfall Road, Rochester -- No admission charge and you don't have to be a member to attend.
Gary Thompson's Photo Tip of the Month

Soft Light on a Bright Sunny Day?

Mossy Cascade by Gary ThompsonThe soft light of a cloudy day is excellent for many types of photography. But, how can a photographer find soft diffused light on a bright sunny day? If one is doing macro work with wild flowers a diffusion tent can be used or perhaps the use of white umbrellas will work. However, what can be done if you wish to photograph a stream or a water falls? Normally I like to photograph these subjects in the rain or more preferably directly after a rain. Even without the wetness of rain, the soft light of an overcast day is often sufficient for making good images of streams and water falls.

On a photo tour that we were leading to the Olympic National Park we hiked the famous Sol Duc Trail and attempted to photograph the Sol Duc River, its tributaries, and its waterfalls. Because the day turned out to be very bright and sunny we realized that the contrast between the dark and brightly lit areas in our images was too great for making good photographs. The weather prediction for the next day was for another bright and sunny day. We were quite disappointed and thought that we would not be able to obtain any really good images along the Sol Duc trail. I suggested that on the next morning we might be able to hike in very early in the morning before the sun rose high enough to penetrate the forest canopy and be able to enjoy a short period of time with soft diffused lighting. The group bought into the idea and we each selected a location and planned how we could compose and photograph that area on the next day.

The next morning we reached the Sol Duc trailhead well before sunrise and began hiking the trail during the morning dusk. By the time we reached our planned destinations the light was good but still soft and even. We were able to enjoy about thirty minutes of soft even lighting and all of us were able to make a few high quality images. My example image is titled Mossy Cascade and because the light was so even I was able to make straight prints of the image without any burning or dodging.

With today's digital photography and the techniques of tone mapping and HDR, photographers enjoy a much greater latitude in working with light contrasts. However, when possible it is still best to work with optimum lighting for the type of subject you are photographing.
