We publish our brief Newsletter during each of our exhibits to pass along information and reviews of the exhibit, photographic tips, selected images and news of other participation opportunities at Image City. Altered States by Betsy Phillips | | Current Show Runs Through Sunday, November 25  Image City Photography Gallery's current exhibit, Altered States, Features the work of Gallery Partner, Betsy Phillips. Her photographs reveal how objects and scenes are transformed by time, light, or happenstance for an altered view of the world. In the East Gallery, David Perlman, a long-time supporter of Image City and Artist-in-Residence has an exhibit of photographs that are clever in both image and presentation. Guest photographers are Simon Faber, Tom McGlynn, and Robert Pierce. Six award winning photographs by Camera Rochester members are by David Ridley, Archie Curry, Susanne Roth, Bev Cronkite, Jim Burton, and Jeno Horvath.
The current exhibit also features 30 photographs from a juried competition. They were captured and edited with cell-phones camera. Creativity of the many artists demonstrate the merging and emerging of art and the image side of the cell-phone technologies. We round out the show with work by Gallery Partners and Artist-in-Residence, Dick Bennett, Carl Crumley, Gil Maker, Steve Levinson, Don Menges, Dan Neuberger, Jim Patton, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, and Sheridan Vincent. Gallery Picks from the Exhibit | | During each of our exhibits a selection of "Picks" is made. Peter Marr was not available for this show to do his brilliant reviews and two of our partners have stepped in to make four selections of Gallery Picks with their comments. Betsy Phillips creative image Zebracar, part of a series she calls CarTalk, is a good example of capturing a vision that most people would not even see. The few people who might see this wonderful play of water droplets and curved lines on a car in the rain might enjoy the sight but would most likely resume their normal activities feeling that it would be too difficult and physically uncomfortable to pursue photographing the image in the rain. Betsy's persistence in working her vision is a tribute to her dedication and determination. The contrast between the hundreds of rain droplets and the many curved parallel lines reflected on the car exterior communicate a beautiful texture and definite feeling of wetness. The slightly diagonal axis of the image and the balance of its components combine well to produce a very pleasant composition. The dark curved vertical line blends with the zebra patterns and nicely separates the black and white components from the colored portions of the image. The title of Zebracar works perfectly for this outstanding impressionistic abstract photograph. --Gary Thompson
 Among the many aesthetically provocative and technically excellent images by Simon Faber, the one that had the greatest impact on me was the black-and-white image, Lines. It is very well crafted, with many lovely triangles, good manipulation of black-on-white and white-on-black, and excellent composition. I am sure that most people have seen utility poles with a profusion of wires, and walked right past them, without ever thinking of photographing them. I would place this image in the category of MAGIC OF THE COMMONPLACE. Photography has done a lot for me, but probably the most important is that it has made me more aware of the world around me.....I see more than most non-photographers, and thus enjoy the world more. Looks as if Simon does also. -- Dan Neuberger
 I have seen a number of excellent images of the Museum of Play's colorful cubes, some of the first ones being in an exhibit at Image City by Bruce Elling. Tom McGlynn's Geometry of Play is also one of my favorites. Aside from being joyous with a splash of brilliant colors, it is enhanced by the imaginative idea of shooting through a sculpture. The contrast between the ellipsoidal opening in the sculpture and the highly rectangular cubes, is appealing. The reflection of one of the colorful cubes in another cube also works very well. There is a wonderful quotation from a French photographer, "Avec la photographie, c'est le regard.....on l'a, ou on ne l'a pas" (In photography, it is the vision...one has it, or one doesn't). Tom certainly has it. -- Dan Neuberger
 David Perlman's photographic collage titled, All that Jazz, communicates a warm nostalgic feeling to everyone who has ever had the experience of playing a musical instrument. The trio of a ukulele, a banjo, and a guitar provides down to earth grass root feelings characteristic of American folk music. His use of warm colors and a horizontal composition further promotes a relaxed and pleasant feeling. Even the warm brown color of the wooden frame enhances these harmonious feelings. David has fun while producing his images and, as he often does, creates mystery and humor by adding and combining additional images to his basic photograph. The addition of the two treble clefs gives an impression of depth to the print. The large bright red treble clef jumps forward in the image and the smaller black one recedes. In post processing he introduces some wonderful, perhaps sensuous, arch like curves that further compliment the emotions that he has communicated so well. -- Gary Thompson |

After five successful editions of our annual juried show, thanks to the quality of the work that has been previously submitted, we have been strongly encouraged to organize a sixth juried show. I am pleased, therefore, to let you know that the theme of the 2013 Image City Juried Theme Show is The Magic of Light. The theme is open, to give you freedom to create astonishing pictures. Feel free to forward this announcement to any of your friends and relatives who might be interested in participating in the Image City Juried Show, The Magic of Light 2013. | Fall Courses and Workshops at Image City | | Our third series of Gallery Courses is down to the final class, Hands on HDR by Don Menges and Carl Crumley, with a few openings yet remaining. Image City Critiques | | At Image City on Wednesday, December 5 at 7pm Each month, we enjoy a good turnout for Image City Critiques, our program at Image City to provide participants an opportunity to engage in a friendly, constructive, and positive critique and review of their photographs. The sessions are held on the first Wednesday of the month. Join us for the next on Wednesday, December 5th from 7:00-9:00 pm. The assignment for this session is tohave two image files of "What Rochester Means to you." Send your two image files for the assignment to share for discussion with the group to Gil Maker (gmaker@mac.com) before Wednesday. December 5th. |
| Niagara Frontier Camera Clubs' 2012 Fall Seminar | | Saturday, November 10 Event Image City Photography Gallery will be attending as a proud sponsor of the Niagara Frontier Camera Clubs' 2012 Fall Seminar. It will be held in Hamburg, New York on November 10. Professional photographers Jay and Varina Patel will be making interesting and informative presentations at the seminar to be held at Michael's Banquet Facility, 4885 Southwestern Boulevard, Hamburg, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. | Rental Rates to Increase in 2013 | | Since the founding of Image City Photography Gallery in 2005, hundreds of photographers have taken the opportunity to exhibit their art with us. We are extremely grateful for their support of Image City. It is key to our success. The expenses for the operation of the Gallery are covered by the rental paid by guest photographers, by entry fees to juried shows, by sales commissions collected, and by Artists-in-Residence and Gallery Partner monthly contributions. We consistently strive to improve the gallery and are pleased when we receive so many glowing compliments for our efforts. With increased operating expenses, we have determined that we will need to make a modest price increase for the rental of exhibit space in the gallery. The price increase will begin with reservations made after January 1, 2013. If you are planning to exhibit in the future, it will be to your advantage to make your reservations for 2013 and 2014 prior to January 1 so that you can avoid the modest price increase. We look forward to hearing from returning artists as well as first-time exhibitors--you will find details on "How To" when you click this link -- exhibition opportunities.
