he Magic of Light 2014

Current Show runs through Sunday, January 26

We start a new year with our popular juried show, The Magic of Light 2014. This is our seventh year with the exhibit where we invite submissions and we select the best for the show. This year we had more than 90 photographers enter and from that we are exhibiting about 170 fine photographs. We are always very pleased with the participations and exceptional photographs from so many talented photographers, many who enter each year and also for those doing it for the first time. The enthusiasm we see is infectious and we really hope that you are able to visit the gallery to see the exceptional range of photographic styles, subjects, and creativity. We were especially pleased to see the very large turnout for our two reception days. Wintery weather did not keep many from enjoying the exhibit and the warm reception time that turned into a joyful festival of photography.

Rounding out the show we have photographs in the East Gallery by Artists-in-Residence, Jim Patton and David Perlman. Although not exhibiting work for this show, the Gallery Partners have very much enjoyed producing The Magic of Light 2014 for all to enjoy. The Gallery Partners Dick Bennett, who managed much of the show logistics, Carl Crumley, Steve Levinson, Gil Maker, chairman of the show, Don Menges, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, and Sheridan Vincent extend our Best Wishes for 2014.

Partner and Peoples Choices for the Show

After the photographs in the exhibit were installed, the Gallery Partners selected their favorites. We also had a bit of a competition where the visitors during the two show reception days made their "People's Choice". Congratulations to the three winners, who each received an award of $100. Click Here to see larger images on our "Picks" webpage.

A Partner's Choice Award: Moonlit Canoes by Peter Blackwood. In this photograph the photographer combines the images of two canoes with a beautiful landscape. This image resonates with the viewer as the two canoe's close, symmetrical positioning makes one wonder what they might symbolize. The lighting in this photograph is superb; the subtle lighting on the canoes interior, the clouds at dusk and the answering reflections in the lake combine to make this the kind of photograph that keeps the viewers eye moving around the image. As with classic Asian landscapes, there are actually three different planes in the composition. The foreground of the canoes slightly merges into the mid-ground with the branches on the shore, then shifts to the opposite shore and sky. The viewer's eye shifts between these planes and enjoys each part of this stunning image.

A Partner's Choice Award: Riverview from 30,000 feet over the Western United States by The Honorable Sandra L. FrankelThe excellent composition of this photograph is even more impressive as it was shot from the window of an airplane. Its almost abstract like qualities, juxtaposition of the colors of the landscape/water and the use of a very strong diagonal composition draw the viewer into the photograph. One can appreciate this photograph as an abstract from a distance or moving closer, one sees the fine detail in the image. The writer of this review believes that there is no such thing as good luck but either bad luck or skill when presenting an image. The photographer, though she was in the right place at the right time, takes a subject that could have been a very mundane "snapshot" and makes it into a fine art photograph. Viewing photographs such as this will surely increase the demand for window seats by traveling photographers!

The People's Choice Award: Hurry, Paris by Andy Schecter. "People's Choice" is an innovation that has not been  used before in The Magic of Light show , and it created much interest and fun among the many visitors attending the two receptions, of whom 322 voted. And the winner was......DRUM ROLL..... Andy Schecter with his delightful photo, Hurry, Paris.  You did not have to be a dog-lover to be enchanted by  this highly appealing and technically excellent image of a young girl in a Jamaican costume leading a proud standard poodle (one would have thought that the image was captured on some Caribbean island, but the locale was actually near here, at Hamlin Beach State Park !).  The composition is flawless, with the trees, poodle,  and girl creating an excellent balance against a white background, and the poodle's tail echoing the young girl's hairdo. Incidentally, Jim Durham, from the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper had chosen this image for publication in a recent edition.  BRAVO, ANDY !

Marketing your Pictures and Yourself by George Wallace
A New Course held with two sessions February 11 and 18

A new course offering at Image City will be "Marketing your Pictures and Yourself" by George Wallace. Reserve your spot early and sign up at the gallery for the course that will be held with two sessions on Tuesday, February 11 and February 18 from 7 to 9 pm. The course fee is $70. For full description and details Click Here. George describes the course

"Poor Van Gogh. He sold few pictures while he was alive. He thought he was a failure, that no one liked his pictures except his brother, Theo. But family will tell you anything. They love you. Van Gogh could have used some marketing help. The only problem was marketing, as a discipline hadn't been invented yet. Van Gogh was not and is not alone. Lots of artists sell no work. And many faced with failure to sell, give up, and abandon what they love. But, it doesn't have to be that way. In two sessions MYPY will show you how to market yourself and your pictures, will help you develop a useable marketing plan, and set you on the way to selling your pictures. Your hobby will begin to help pay for itself. PS I sell hundreds of pictures a year."
