Portfolio Showcase 2014 -- the Exhibit | | Current Show Runs Through Sunday, September 7 Our current exhibit at Image City Photography Gallery is this year's Portfolio Showcase 2014. Portfolios selected for the exhibit are by Dick Beery, Stanley Hattman, Tom Kredo, Joel Krenis, Frank Liberti, Julie McGann, Michael Rivera, and Jane Walker. We have gotten many high compliments on the exhibit and the artistic creation of the awarded photographers. Congratulations to them all for their distinctive art and superb photography. Jurors for the selection of the winning portfolios were Andrew Davidhazy and Christine Heusner, professors at RIT. We very much appreciate their efforts in making difficult decisions from so many fine entries. The eight portfolios were selected from the submissions that again demonstrated a very high level of skill and creativity by the photographers who entered. During the exhibit, we will be displaying selections of our favorite images from all of the photographers' submissions on a video display. The Gallery Partners awarded the portfolio by Tom Kredo with the Grand Prize. His photograph Greek Path is shown above. Each of the photographers with the winning portfolios won a gift certificate from Lumiere Photo and pixelPRESERVE.
We appreciate very much the support of sponsors Lumiere Photo, our good neighbor in the Neighborhood of the Arts, at 100 College Avenue, and Denison Creative colocated with pixelPRESERVE at 439 Monroe Avenue for their significant contributions to an exceptional show and a beautiful special book (see the next article). The exhibit will also include work by R. Glenn Alexander of pixelPRESERVE; Erin Markum of Lumiere Photo, Gallery Partners Dick Bennett, Carl Crumley, Steve Levinson, Gil Maker, Don Menges, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, and Sheridan Vincent; Artists-in-Residence, Jim Patton and David Perlman. Gil Maker, a Gallery Partner, will have his work in the East Gallery, an extension of our main gallery. Click Here to see a preview on our website of a selection of photographs from the exhibit. There is no admission fee at Image City and is accessible to all. |
Portfolio Showcase 2014, the Book | | Additional Copies are Available for Purchase!
An additional award for the eight photographers selected for the Portfolio Showcase is the supurb book that was designed by Denison Creative and produced by pixelPRESERVE. Each of the photographs from their exhibit is reproduced in the book along with the photographs by the Gallery and Sponsor photographers. Joel Krenis' photo Ground Level Leopard was chosen for the dramatic cover. Copies of the book are available for purchase for $25 at Image City. Portfolio Showcase 2014 is a fine addition to any collection of photography books. |

Image City Critiques Meeting: Next is September 3rd | | The Image City Critique Group meets the first Wednesday of the month. Participants meet and review photographs that they bring in a friendly critiquing session. We will meet again on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7pm at the Gallery. The assignment for the September meeting is described by Don Menges -- "Our goal is to get you out shooting; so bring some new images. We also want you to be more creative with your images. Think about using a very narrow depth of field. Take your images from a unique point of view... yes, get on the ground. Try and look for some different lighting. Set up something in a place where it wouldn't usually be. Do NOT just point your camera and shoot! Work at this a bit. Here's the assignment.... shoot "signs". What???? Do I mean like a stop sign???? Could be - IF YOU MAKE IT UNIQUE. ...and, I don't mean just literal "signs". Figurative signs are even better. A sign of spring. A sign of love. A sign of compassion. A sign of luck. A sign of decay. This is very open to interpretation. Be creative." Email your images before the meeting to Don Menges dmenges@rochester.rr.com. |
New Course Scheduled for the Fall | | Creating Great Photographs with Adobe Lightroom 5 A Course from the Image City Photography Gallery by Steve Levinson Thursday nights, October 30, November 6, 13, and 20 from 7-9 pm If you are like me, you don't want to spend your time learning and using an expensive, complex software package to import and optimize your photographs; but want to use your time using a simple, powerful and intuitive tool to produce stunning photographs. You can experiment fearlessly with color, exposure and more without overwriting your original images. After taking this lecture and workshop course, you will be have a workflow (or standardized process) that you can efficiently follow for every photograph you make: (1) importing images into your computer so that you can easily find them at a later time, (2) selecting the best images using an organized process (3) creating a fine digital image and then (4) making a fine digital print or posting on the Internet. Time will be available to practice and discuss both provided images and images from your own portfolio. RAW is the preferred original format for images, though high quality JPEGS will also work. Participants should be familiar with the basics of digital cameras, photography and transferring files to your computer. They will also need to have or borrow an Apple or PC laptop computer for the course. Software is available from Adobe on a free, one month trial. Please do not download this software until the day before the course, so that it will be available for all of the four sessions. We will meet at the historic Pittsford Flour Mill, 15 Schoen Place, Pittsford. The price for this course will be $165 and be limited to a maximum of eight photographers. Please contact Steve Levinson (steven.levinson@gmail.com, 330.1490) for more information. Sign up and prepayment at Image City Photography Gallery.
