Through the Student Lens 2019

Current Show Runs Through Sunday, April 14

First Friday Gallery Night, April  5, 5 - 9 pm

Our current exhibit is Through the Student Lens 2019 featuring the photographs of students from 18 local high schools. It is our tenth annual exhibit of the work of talented photography students. Visitors attending are telling us how much they are enjoying the  enthusiasm, vision and perspectives that the young photographers bring to the exhibit. So that the students can experience the full gallery experience, their photographs are available for purchase with proceeds going the artists.

We are again grateful to the sponsorship of Michael Hager at  Museum Photographics who printed the student photographs in the exhibit and to Jason Campbell of Frameworks of Rochester who mounted them for display. Their underwriting support for the student shows over the years is greatly appreciated.

At the opening reception, Don Menges, who chaired and organized the exhibit, announced that School of the Arts was selected by the Gallery Partners as the Best of the Show.  Representing the school at the reception are Ken Riemer (volunteer/photo club co-advisor), Mariela Hernandez (grade 9), Susan Rudy (SOTA art teacher, photo club co-advisor), Christina Carleton (grade 8), and Alan Tirre (SOTA Academy Director, photo club co-advisor. If you stop into the Gallery during the Student Show you will notice that some photos have a gold star on the information tag.  In fact there are 9 gold stars as each one represents the favorite image of one of the 9 partners. At the end of the show a letter form the Gallery will be sent to each of these students recognizing that they have received an "Excellence in Photography" award from Image City Photography Gallery for the Through the Student Lens 2019 exhibit. As there was 180 photographs to choose from, this is quite an accomplishment.

Participating high schools are: Allendale Columbia, Aquinas Institute, Brighton, East Rochester,  Gananda, Greece Athena, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Le Roy, Penfield, Pittsford Mendon, Pittsford Sutherland, Red Creek, School of the Arts, Spencerport, Webster Thomas, West Irondequoit, Wheatland-Chili and World of Inquiry. Keeping with the student-artist theme, we also have an exhibit of photographs from the students at Studio 678 Wilson Foundation Academy Photo Club, a program of the Flower City Arts Center. We very much appreciate the participation of all of the teachers whose guidance and coaching of the student photographers has given an exhibit with everyone's talent on exhibit!

Visiting Artist, Edgar Ballestas, continues with an exhibit of his captivating New York City photographs. Gallery partner, Gil Maker, is exhibiting in the Newberger Gallery.  Also featured in the show are award-winning photographs by Camera Rochester photographers, Dave Braitsch, John Ejaife, Stephen Fielding, and Anthony Paladino. Rounding out the exhibit is work by our Artists-in-Residence, Jim Patton, David Perlman, Gary Thompson, and Phyllis Thompson and Gallery Partners, Dick Bennett, Carl Crumley, Steven Levinson, Gil Maker, Don Menges, Luann Pero, Betsy Phillips, John Solberg,  and Sheridan Vincent.

Plan to attend First Friday Gallery Night on April 5  from 5 to 9 pm. This receptions are a great opportunity to view the art, discuss it with the attending artists, and to invest in their photographs. Click Here  to see our webpage for show details and a preview of photographs in the exhibit.

Partners' Pick of the Exhibit

After reviewing the photographs by the Guest Photographers in the current exhibit partners have selected one of our favorites and has written a commentary on why we made the selection. This is a popular feature of Image City exhibits, visitors enjoy reading the insightful comments while viewing the photos.

The Stillness of NYC by Edgar Ballestas --Edgar's photographs of New York have been consistently striking, demonstrating a great eye, in-the-field photographic skill and excellent post-processing technique. The Stillness of NYC is a great example of each of these, and there is an added quality that makes this image stand out. That quality is mood - a sense of mystery, a sense of dark intrigue, a fleeting thought of Gotham city. The mood is no accident, but rather a reflection of the photographer's skill in all three areas mentioned above. First, the photograph was taken (as its title implies) under a gray cloud-filled sky. The long-time exposure has erased the structures of any cloud formations giving the sky an eerie flowing quality. The same exposure has erased any structures in the water. It is a mirror for the sky, doubling the mysterious quality. The image is almost black and white with only traces of color, in a way so natural for our vision as darkness approaches. The color may be there, but our eyes no longer can capture it. The dramatic array of black wooden piles, now without any other purpose, lead our view to the great city. There they stand, the massive buildings, each with an almost graphic structure. It is all so still. Quiet. Waiting. The natural stone bank in the foreground, with its rough surfaces and irregular shapes sets the scene apart from our immediate presence. We look over it and let our imaginations go free.
